Seasonal occurrence of cicadas in Alachua County, Florida

(by T. J. Walker)

There are no north Florida periodical cicadas. All species occur as adults every year even though the life cycles of all cicadas require several to many years. Thus the time of occurrence during the months of favorable temperatures (April to December in this case) is unlikely to be influenced by either overwintering stage or rate of development—which have large effects in many insects. In cicadas, seasonal timing of adult activity is most likely influenced by the seasonal occurrence of conditions favorable for oviposition, egg-hatching and the establishment of nymphs. The seasonal occurrence of potential parasitoids and predators also may be of importance.
