| Tropical Entomology Laboratory |
ENY 3564L/5564
In this laboratory, early in "Summer B" (early July), students will visit a tropical country and will be shown the insect fauna of various natural ecosystems and agroecosystems. Each student will select in advance a small project to be accomplished in the field during the trip. Students will interact with faculty members and students of the host institution (Universidad Central de Venezuela).

Duration of trip: Currently 10 days
Cost of trip: ~$900 in 1999 (but subject to inflation), ~$1100 in 2009 (but that was for 13 days). This amount includes: rental car for transport to and from Miami airport, ground transport in Venezuela, catered meals, accommodations at Rancho Grande, and airport departure tax. Anything else, such as roadside refreshments or postcards, etc., is extra.
Grades: are based on field projects: (a) the student's verbal account of the project, delivered to the other students during the final day of the trip, and (b) a written report to be submitted after return to the USA and at least ten days before the end of "Summer B."
Entomological activities of previous trips include interaction with faculty and students of the host institution, and entomologizing in natural and agricultural habitats.
Some students who participated in previous trips have recorded their comments. One of them offers advice on what to bring and what not to bring.
The instructor wants you to know that you will be encountering nature in the wild, and it has no air-conditioning, but that thought has been given to your security and expectations.
Thought has also been given to future changes in the course.
